JUST CAUSE TENANT EVICTION PROTECTIONS

The City Council approved a Universal Just Cause ordinance that will extend tenant protections. Under the ordinance, landlords will not be able to evict tenants without a justified reason such as failure to pay rent, nuisance or lease violations. In cases where landlords evict tenants without an approved cause (called a “no fault” eviction), then the landlord is required to pay tenant relocation costs. Protections kick in at the end of the tenants first lease, or six months after the tenant moves in, whichever comes first. Moreover, additional tenants and pets are protected for another year until February 2024. For more information, click here
