The City Council reaffirmed its commitment to action on climate change, unanimously approving an ordinance to prohibit new oil and gas extraction in the City. Under the ordinance, operators must also phase out existing extraction activities- a move aimed at promoting healthier communities and protecting future generations.

“This initiative is rooted in environmental justice and equity, and is a major victory for low-income neighborhoods and communities of color, which are disproportionately impacted by the hazards associated with oil and gas extraction. With this decisive vote, Los Angeles is once again leading by example on climate change and putting the safety of Angelenos first,” said Councilmember Price.
