The City Council approved a report from the Transportation Committee relative to the implementation of Assembly Bill (AB) 645 and establishing a pilot program to reduce speeding. In 2022, more than 300 people were killed in car crashes throughout the City – impacting mostly people walking, biking, people of color and low-income communities. The report notes that unsafe speed is the primary factor for severe injuries and/or deaths and lowering velocity by 5 miles per hour can be the difference between life or death.
Under the state law, the City will be able to implement speed camera systems in school zones, high injury streets, and in areas with a history of speed racing. The report instructs the Department of Transportation to report back with recommended criteria to identify 125 speed safety locations in disproportionately burdened low-income communities and more.
