On March 30, Councilmember Price joined Mayor Karen Bass, USC President Carol Folt and President of Ward Economic Development Corporation (WEDC) Jackie Dupont-Walker for the much-anticipated ribbon cutting ceremony for Casa de Rosas - a renovated, historic campus in the heart of District 9 for formerly homeless veterans and their families.

Originally built as a private kindergarten in 1893, the site has served a variety of purposes over the years, including a college prep school for young women, an inn and restaurant, barracks for soldiers during World War II, and more. The 29,900-square-foot complex is now home for 35 veterans and their families.

“This is a beautiful building that has stood the test of time and will now be used to provide peace of mind for our most vulnerable population,” added Councilman Price. “For nearly 130 years, Casa de Rosas has weathered the storm and we are so thankful that it could be refurbished and repurposed into affordable veteran housing.”

Casa de Rosas features a garden and courtyards, as well as a Head Start location operated by USC, where young children will take part in its early education program. Among the other services offered at the site are career goal setting, job development and other support to meet the needs of single-parent families.
